    Oral surgery

    • Get multiple comfort options like ice, vibration, and compression. We recommend VibraCool Extended.
    • Pain may start a few hours after surgery and last for days. Have a comfortable sleep area with distractions and comfort items nearby.
    • Take ibuprofen soon after surgery to reduce inflammation. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen provide better pain relief with fewer side effects than oral opioids.
    • Use Buzzy or VibraCool for pain reduction during awake injections. Consider alternating acetaminophen with ibuprofen or use before bed.
    • Use short-acting if physical interventions aren't enough. Have video games, treats, and pleasant activities available.

    Knee surgery

    • Preparation for knee surgery includes pre-hab and practicing relaxation techniques before surgery to increase control and reduce fear.
    • Unless you have a specific history of opioid use disorder, opioids during surgery and in the hospital are totally appropriate. Set your expectation for post-surgical pain management to “manageable” or “more comfortable”, not pain-free.
    • For home pain relief, many people do really well, and you might have very little discomfort. Having options like VibraCool Extended and a plan if you experience more than a little is the key

    • Prepare for wrist or elbow surgery by considering everyday activities and making accommodations in advance. Planning for one-handed activities can prevent feeling overwhelmed and increasing pain.
    • Learning and practicing relaxation techniques before surgery also helps increase control and reduce fear, key aspects of pain management. A video of one easy and fast relaxation and breathing trick is below.
    • Unless you have a history of opioid use disorder, opioids during surgery and in the hospital are appropriate. Expect manageable or more comfortable pain after surgery, not pain-free.
    • For home pain relief, having options and a plan is key - achieving a more comfortable opioid-free recovery at home is absolutely attainable!

    • Before discharge, ask your surgeon how long it will be until you're back to normal; plan enough pleasant activities, distractions, and new options for at least half that time.
    • Alternate acetaminophen and ibuprofen, use before bed, or take short-acting if physical interventions aren't sufficient yet.
    • The sooner you're up and moving, the better. Clear clutter and add supports to enhance moving, or have someone do it for you if the surgery wasn't planned.
    • Heat + vibration with the VibraCool Flex unit, including an ice pack and a heat pack, may alleviate abdominal muscle pain or cramping in muscles supporting the hips or torso.
    • Additional long ice packs to slip over shoulders may help pain in other muscles that get painful trying to stabilize the surgery site. We also have a physical copy of the What Works for Pain workbook to find other physical and brain-body options.
