FAQ

BUZZY®

What is Buzzy? Buzzy is a high-frequency vibration unit paired with unique, freeze-hard ice packs.

What is Buzzy used for? Buzzy is used to block the pain from injections, IVs, splinters, stings, and itching. To be exact, Buzzy is FDA cleared to:

“Control pain associated with injections, venipuncture, IV starts, cosmetic injections, and the temporary relief of minor injuries (muscle or tendon aches, splinters and bee stings). Also intended to treat myofascial pain caused by trigger points, restricted motion and muscle tension.”

Buzzy is contraindicated for people with CRPS, Reynauds, sickle cell disease, or any sensitivity to cold.

Does Buzzy really work?

Yes! In 30+ published clinical trials, pain reduction ranged from 56 - 74% when Buzzy was used alone. Including DistrACTION® cards reduced pain by 86 -88%. For more information on Buzzy research, or to read a full literature review of the studies, you can contact us at orders@paincarelabs.com
What comes with the device? Buzzy XL Personal comes with a high-frequency vibration unit, 2 wing-shaped ice packs, a hands-free strap, and instructions. Buzzy XL Personal Plus also includes 2 sets of DistrACTION Cards.
What are DistrACTION Cards?
Each set of DistrACTION Cards includes 5 durable, brightly colored, travel-sized cards on a snap ring. The cards are designed with hunting and finding tasks to take the patient's mind off a painful procedure. The cards are available in a range of collectible series. The cards are proven effective at reducing pain and anxiety and can be used alone or with Buzzy.
Do I have to use the ice packs? Do the ice packs have to be completely frozen? Can I use my own, soft ice packs?
Using ice packs is recommended. Ice is most effective for inflammation and provides about 60% of the pain relief. If the ice is uncomfortable, you can use the soft white side of the ice pack, or use vibration only, without the ice packs. For optimal pain relief, the ice pack must be frozen solid to avoid absorbing the vibration.
Will Buzzy work for my procedure/condition/pain? Probably! Buzzy is very versatile and effective for most needle procedures and minor injuries. Some examples are home injections, port placement, IVF, growth hormone, insulin, finger sticks, flu shots, and vaccinations. It also works well for long procedures like injections, IV access, infusions, wart removal, Botox® and fillers. Buzzy can also be used at home for itching, splinter removal, and general first aid. For information on the correct placement of Buzzy® for your procedure, contact us at orders@paincarelabs.com
Is Buzzy just for kids? No! Buzzy’s patented combination of vibration and cold actually works better for older kids and adults. This is because Buzzy blocks pain by stimulating nerve pathways that develop as children age.
Can Buzzy be used on infants?
Sort of! Clinical trials have shown Buzzy to be effective on children older than 18 months. Children younger than 18 months of age may experience discomfort with the use of the cold component. You may choose not to use the ice (vibration only), or may use the soft white side of the Universal Soft Ice Wings while using Buzzy. Alternatively, the child can hold an ice pack in the hand to provide a competing sensation.
How does Buzzy work?
Have you ever hurt your finger and put it under running water to make it feel better? Buzzy works the same way! Buzzy stimulates the nerves that transmit temperature and motion information to the brain. When the body receives signals from these nerves, it prioritizes that information over pain signals. This physiologic response is called Gate Control Theory.
How does Buzzy compare to topical anesthetics? Studies confirm Buzzy is as effective as topical anesthetics at a fraction of the cost and time.
How long will Buzzy last?
Buzzy is completely reusable. It is powered by 2 AAA batteries that can be replaced by unscrewing the back of the vibration unit. Fully charged batteries should last about 20 hours of use. Each ice wing will last around 100 uses.
Is there a warranty? Our manufacturer’s warranty for Buzzy Personal units is 6 months. Personal Buzzy is designed for single-patient use and is not warrantied for use in multi-patient settings.
VIBRACOOL®
What is VibraCool?
VibraCool is a wearable device intended to replace or complement icing for recovery. It combines high-frequency vibration with ice and compression to provide a multi-modal approach to pain relief and injury recovery.
Does VibraCool really reduce pain?
Yes! Both ice and vibration are proven to decrease pain. Ice is good at decreasing inflammation, but it can also decrease blood flow and stiffen muscles. Adding vibration improves blood flow and loosens stiff muscles. The benefits of ice and vibration are well documented - VibraCool puts cold and vibration together for the first time! To read the studies or get a copy of our literature review, email us as orders@paincarelabs.com
What comes with the device?

Buzzy

Can Buzzy be used for finger sticks?
Yes; place Buzzy on the palm with the bottom end (switch is top end) toward the finger. Leave in place throughout cleaning and procedure.

Does Buzzy work for itching?
Yes, Buzzy is effective in the relief of itching. The sensation of itching is transmitted on the same nerves as sharp pain.

Does Buzzy work for adults?
Independent clinical research supports the use of Buzzy for flu shots, injectable medications given at home or in clinical settings, aesthetic procedures, and chronic pain relief. Buzzy’s patented combination of vibration and cold actually works better for adults than kids. Buzzy works in a fraction of the time it takes for more expensive creams and at a fraction of the cost. Buzzy improves procedural success, including first-time IV access.

Is there any scientific research on Buzzy?
Multiple independent clinical studies researching Buzzy and our Distraction tools have been published with results that support their effectiveness. Some studies have utilized ice wings, some with Buzzy alone.

HOW TO USE BUZZY

How do I use Buzzy for shots?
When ready to use Buzzy, attach frozen wing to vibration unit. Activate Buzzy and place vibration unit with ice on the site of the shot. Leave for 15 seconds for surface shots, 60 seconds for deeper injections. Immediately before the shot, move Buzzy proximal (closer to the head) to allow the site to be cleaned. Unit stays activated throughout the cleaning and the procedure.

How do I use Buzzy placed to relieve IV pain?
Immediately before cleaning the site of access, place Buzzy 1-3 cm proximal to the site (under or on top of the tourniquet) and activate vibration. Do not place Buzzy directly on the site of access.

ICE PACK QUESTIONS

How many times can I use each ice pack?
Each ice wing should last for approximately 100 uses.

Can I use disposable crushable ice packs?
No, these do not freeze solid and absorb vibration (reducing the effectiveness of Buzzy) and are not sufficiently cold to reduce pain.

How long do ice packs stay frozen?
Wings will stay frozen approximately 10 minutes at room temperature. To transport and maintain frozen temperature, place wings in an insulated lunch bag or freezer with commercially available ice packs. For longer procedures and for medications that burn or sting, prepare and freeze additional wings. Store folded ice wings in freezer for maximum benefit.

How long does it take for the ice packs to re-freeze?
Wings will freeze solid in approximately 30 minutes.
Do I really need to use the ice pack?
Use the ice pack unless it bothers the child or there is a sensitivity to cold. The cold adds about 60% of the pain relief in older children and adults. The wings that come with personal Buzzy kits have a soft side that may feel slightly less cold. Always begin with clean, fresh wings from the freezer. Wings must be frozen solid to work optimally. Slide the wings through the elastic band. For patients under 6 months old, patients with cold sensitivity, Raynaud’s or sickle cell disease, use Buzzy without the wings. The child can hold the ice pack in the hand to provide a competing sensation.

How do I clean my Buzzy?
Buzzy is a personal consumer product intended to be used by a single user. Buzzy may be cleaned with alcohol based sanitation wipes. Do not immerse in liquid. Soiled wings should be disposed of and replaced.

What size batteries does Buzzy® take?
Buzzy® is powered by 2 alkaline AAA batteries that will last at full strength for about 20 hours. For optimal operation, replace batteries when vibration weakens.

How do you replace the batteries?
Refreshing your Buzzy with new batteries is easy! Unscrew the back using a Phillips head screwdriver. Remove back panel, then carefully remove batteries. If Buzzy is not being used for an extended period of time, remove batteries for storage to avoid corrosion.
